Marriage Takes Three

“Marriage Takes Three - The Crucial Role of Jesus in Strengthening Relationships"

My husband and I will be married for 25 years this August! We could not have reached this wonderful milestone without the loving guidance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Marriage is a sacred union that binds two individuals together in a lifelong commitment. While it is essential for a husband and wife to invest time, effort, and love into their relationship, there is an often overlooked, yet powerful, factor that plays a significant role in making a marriage work—Jesus Christ. By anchoring their relationship in faith and incorporating biblical principles, couples can experience a deeper connection and resilience in their union. This article will explore how inviting Jesus into the center of a marriage can bring strength, stability, and everlasting love.

1. Biblical Foundation for a Christ-centered Marriage:

To establish the significance of Jesus in a marriage, one must turn to the Scriptures. Ephesians 5:22-33 provides a clear blueprint for husbands and wives, emphasizing the importance of their roles and unity. Verse 31 states, "For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This verse highlights the divine intention of creating an unbreakable bond between a husband and wife, which is only possible when Jesus Christ is invited into their union.

2. Jesus as the Foundation of Love:

In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, often referred to as the "Love Chapter," the apostle Paul describes the characteristics of genuine love. This scriptural passage teaches that love is patient, kind, forgiving, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Jesus, the ultimate embodiment of love, serves as an example for couples to follow. By recognizing that their love for each other flows from Jesus' unconditional love for them, husbands and wives are equipped to display these qualities in their relationship.

3. Seeking Guidance and Direction in Prayer:

A couple that prays together stays together. Prayer is a powerful tool for maintaining a strong and healthy marriage. Matthew 18:20 declares, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." By seeking Jesus' guidance through prayer, couples can invite His divine presence into their decision-making, seek resolution in times of conflict, and strengthen their faith together. Regular prayer sessions can create an atmosphere of unity, openness, and vulnerability, fostering a deeper connection between a husband, wife, and Jesus.

4. Building a Solid Foundation:

Just as a house needs a strong foundation to withstand storms, a marriage requires a solid foundation to endure challenges. Jesus provides that foundation. Luke 6:46-49 speaks of the wise man who built his house on the rock, symbolizing a marriage anchored in Jesus Christ. When couples build their relationship on the teachings of Jesus, they establish a firm foundation of unwavering faith, unwavering commitment, and unwavering love, helping them weather the storms of life together.

In a world where many marriages face turmoil and fail, inviting Jesus to be an integral part of a union provides couples with the strength, love, and guidance needed to thrive. By recognizing that marriage takes three—husband, wife, and Jesus—couples can tap into an unshakeable bond that defies adversity and enriches their lives. Embracing biblical truths, seeking guidance through prayer, and building their relationship on the teachings of Jesus, couples can experience a love that is enduring, resilient, and eternally fulfilling.
